Wike Bans Trailers, Tankers From Port Harcourt

The Rivers state governor, Nyesom Wike, has banned trailer and tanker drivers from parking along busy Azikiwe Road, close to the Government House in Port Harcourt, the Rivers state capital.

It would be recalled that in Lagos state, the government recently restricted the movement of trailers and heavy articulated vehicles from the roads in the state between 6am-9pm. This was necessitated following a recent accident involving anarticulated vehicle conveying a 20ft container falling of the bridge and killing three people at Ojuelegba, Lagos.
Giving the directive, governor Wike said the ban was to ensure public safety and peace in the state capital and directed that the trucks be moved to Iriebe Trailer Park in Obio/Akpor Local Government Area.
“It is unwise and unsafe to allow trailers that carry refined petroleum products, which are inflammable, to continue to park along roads and streets that witness heavy traffic daily.
“We must also take into consideration the hundreds of thousands of commuters that ply the roads and streets daily. It is the duty of government to protect the lives and property of its citizens.
“I want you to begin work on Monday at the latest. You should liaise with the chief of staff on the cost implication of clearing Iriebe Trailers Park so that you can swing into action as soon as possible” Wike said during the inauguration of the task forces to clear Iriebe Trailer Park and implement the ‘no-parking order’.
Meanwhile, an Ebute-Metta Chief Magistrates’ Court has remanded Adeyanju Kilani, the owner of the articulated vehicle which fell of the bridge on Sept. 2, in prison custody. The articulated vehicle conveying a 20ft container fell of the bridge and killed three people at Ojuelegba, Lagos.
But the South West chairman of the National Petroleum and Gas Workers (NUPENG), Tokunbo Korodo, today, September 11, told journalists that the recent daytime restriction of articulated vehicles by the Lagos state government do not affect petroleum tankers.
