Emergency teams and ambulances seen at the scene of the crain collapse.
According to Nigeria’s Consul-General to Saudi Arabia, Ahmed Umar, the dead pilgrims were buried in a “specially designated cemetery’’ in Mecca after receiving invitation of the Saudi Authority.
At the burial ceremony alongside the Consul-General were officials of the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria.
The consul-general also revealed that the other 6 Nigerian pilgrims who sustained injuries during the incident are currently receiving special attention even as some of them have been discharged from hospital.
Ahmed Umar stressed that the Nigerian government was fascinated with the kind gesture of King Salman bin Abdulazeez, who donated the money to the families of the affected pilgrims.
Saudi Authority had said it would give 1m Riyals –about N53.1 million — to the families of each of the deceased while those that sustained permanent disability would also get the same amount while others with minor injury would get half of the amount.
Mr. Umar assured Nigerians and families of the victims that the money would be delivered to the right persons.
An investigation has been launched to look into the reasons behind the collapse and assess the general damage. Officials say a stormy weather is to blame, as international correspondents add concerns had been previously raised over safety measures on Saudi construction sites.
